Cleaning the microwave is one of those daunting tasks that no one likes to do and I don’t blame them. It’s worse when you have kids in the house and they heat stuff up too long… you know, to the point of explosion or boiling over. Let’s be honest, we’ve all been there too. I won’t even lie but it’s been some time since I cleaned the microwave. I mean, it is higher up and I am only 5’2 so yeah, that’s my story and I am sticking to it! Haha! Well, since I thought it was time to clean the microwave, I thought I would show you all how to steam clean your microwave. No hard chemicals needed and a little scrubbing can go a long way.
Why am I calling this steam cleaning? We all know that when we boil water it creates steam and essentially this is what you are going to be doing in the microwave. You are going to combine your ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl and heat it up. This will create the steam and loosen anything stuck in your microwave allowing it to come off much easier.
Water | White Vinegar | Lemons – In a microwave-safe bowl combine equal parts water and white vinegar. Slice up some fresh lemons and add them to the bowl. Lemons are more of an optional choice. I added a bunch of slices to my bowl as I prefer the smell of lemons over vinegar. Now the lemons won’t take the smell of vinegar away completely, but it does help.
Let’s Heat Things Up
For our microwave, I set mine for 7 minutes. This allowed the water to start boiling and create the steam I wanted. Once that door starts to steam up, you know it’s getting hot in there and that is just what you want. Once your microwave goes off, allow your bowl to sit for a few minutes. You want to keep the steam in the microwave allowing the buildup to loosen. Please, be careful taking the bowl out. It might be hot.
When it came to cleaning the microwave plate, I decided to pour the contents of the bowl onto the plate directly. I did this in the sink and allowed the hot liquid to sit directly on the food allowing cleanup to become much easier. I did some scrubbing here but most of the food came off with a breeze. With the microwave plate, I let it sit while I cleaned the inside of the microwave, which only took a few moments.
As much as I love cleaning, there are a few things I truly despise cleaning and the microwave is just one of them. For me, their either too high and I can’t reach or too low and I have to hunch to clean it. Then you have to get in all the corners and such. No thank you! By using this steam clean method, I cut the time in half, if not more. And I love that I didn’t have to use any harsh chemicals that would bother me when I breathe.
Try this method and let me know your thoughts.
