My First Knitted Cowl

May 30, 2016

I have always been one to crochet. I have been teaching myself to knit and a few months ago I made my first knitted cowl. I have to say I am pretty happy witho how this turned out.

Being that I am new to knitting, I was super excited to make My First Knitted Cowl. My First Knitted Cowl was simple & fun. It was also new which was great!

HAHA!!!! This is such a bad photo, but it will just have to do. I made this cowl a few months ago and currently, it’s packed away so I can’t retake the photos. =P

What is a cowl exactly? In my terms… It’s basically a small version of the infinity scarf. The difference in the two is the size for the most part. A cowl just goes around your neck. There is no wrapping it multiple times. An infinity scarf is meant to wrap around twice hence the name infinity.

I was pretty happy with the turn out of this cowl. I was a bit confused on how to make it when I first started as I have never made one and the pattern wasn’t what I was expecting.

For this cowl, I used circular needles. I used my size US 9 (5.5mm) needles. I also used a 32″ circular needle for this project.
I started with my cast on. I used Worsted Weight yarn which called for 112 cast on. =)

I got stuck on the first two rows as it was done a little different. Well, mainly the first row. You didn’t start in the round right away and I was just lost! Haha. I had to seek help from some of my favorite Knitting groups on Facebook. =)

I was pretty proud that I was able to get the first part done. =P It’s the little things. I am still learning all the different kinds of things you can do with knitting and it’s pretty exciting.

If you have ever wanted to learn how to knit, don’t think you can’t do it, because you can. It may take some time but you can do it.!

Once my Cowl was all knitted and I cast off, sewed in the ends, I washed it. I used warm water and baby wash to wash my cowl. I then rand all the extra water out. I don’t have a blocking kit yet, and even though it’s a bit hard to block acrylic yarn I sill did.

Since I didn’t have a blocking kit, I laid my cowl down flat and piled some heavy books on it. It worked! The edges didn’t curl as much as it had before! =D

I feel as the end result was pretty awesome and I am very excited and proud to wear something I made. I usually make things for everyone else and nothing for myself. Well, I loved making something for myself! It’s exciting! I can’t wait to make more!

The only thing I wish I had done different, was to make it longer. Other than that, I loved it!!!

I love the color of your knitted cowl! I bet it is very rewarding and satisfying to be able to wear something that you created from your own skills. I’ve always thought that that would be so neat!

I have been trying to learn to knit for years. I get halfway through a project, then give up. I love how cute this is and it totally seems do-able! Love the color you picked!

I didn’t even know what a cowl was lol, but I totally love it. It really brings out the color in your eyes and makes them pop. I think that turquoise color is the perfect color for you.

This is so awesome! I just started to teach myself how to knit and I have made a few cowls. I am trying to learn how to do some more stitches, but knitting to me is not as easy to learn as crochet was for me.

I love the color yarn that you used and think you did an amazing job. I give you credit for crocheting and knitting. I tried to crochet a few times and it was a hot mess. I wish I could make things like this but instead I pay others for their amazing work!

I love that look for sure. I wish I could knit – I have tried to learn but for some reason I just cannot get the hang of it. I really like the color of yarn you used too. Perfect for winter and summer! Great job!!

It looks great! So, it’s like a mini version of an infinity scarf? I LOVE infinity scarves and own a few. This is something I could wear year round with the right outfit. I need to go look up the difference between a cowl and infinity scarf!

Oh I’d definitely be interested in winning one. I’ve seen infinity scarves and I’ve seen cowls and I love them both. I actually have cowled sweaters and I just love the look. You did a great job with yours.

First off, your photos are beautiful – I would love to have that cowl – but…I won’t be knitting anytime soon – Maybe in retirement I’ll learn – I’ve done a lot of DIY but not yet knitting!

I really wish that I was crafty enough or had the patience to sit down and knit. This is beautiful and congrats to you on getting it done. I love the color!

Your knitted cowl turned out very nice for the first time knitting one. I too have always been more of a crocheter than a knitter. My mom taught me both but I have never really knitted anything but a scarf. I will have to try knitting a cowl.

How beautiful! I have been looking for a hobby and maybe, perhaps, I’m not sure but maybe this could be it. I don’t know if I have the patience and I would probably freak out if it I didn’t do well on my first attempts but … how beautiful. I would love to be able to pass this down to my daughter.
