Driving Across Country Tips

February 18, 2017

Driving Across the Country was a challenge to say the least. You’re stuck in a car for endless hours, your butt goes numb from sitting too long, and what about your back? Oh your poor back is probably so sore.

When you Drive Across the Country you need to make sure you plan or you will end up miserable and possibly stuck somewhere. It’s for that reason I want to share with you all my Driving Across Country Tips in hopes they will help you for your future road trip.

Was Driving Across the Country worth it?

Of course! The world is a huge place and even then, the country we live in is huge. We are just a little speck (thinking about Horton Hear’s a Who, haha) on this earth and sometimes we get so consumed in doing things fast and easy that we forget about the sights to see. Driving from New Jersey to Colorado was a very long drive but I have to say it was worth it. It was an experience for my son and I, and I am all about new experiences.

My Drive Across the Country was from New Jersey to Colorado. This trip was just under 1800 miles and should have only taken about 27 hours with taking a No Toll Route. However, I ran into some problems therefore I would like to share with you some tips from my experience. This drive wasn’t to visit anyone or see sights. I actually packed up and moved across the country and now I know what to do and not to do if I ever do it again.

Driving Across Country Tips

Plan – Planning your trip is the most important step. Whether this is a fun trip or you are moving like I did, you need to plan. I planned pretty well but I ran into weather issues which slowed us down and I didn’t get to my destination at the time I needed to. If you have to arrive somewhere by a certain time allow yourself some extra time and leave earlier. Rather be early than late.

Snacks – Packing snacks and stuff to munch on is important. When you’re driving for hours it is important to make sure you have some goodies with you to munch on. You have to remember when you are on the open road that there won’t always be somewhere to pull off and grab food. This doesn’t mean you can’t be totally healthy either. Get yourself a small cooler to pack some drinks and snacks in. I love snacking on grapes. I could eat those forever and they are a great healthy snack. Don’t forget water. You need to stay hydrated.

Budget – Any road trip needs a budget. How many miles are you going? How many miles to the gallon does your vehicle get? When I did my road trip I averaged gas out to be $2.50 for the entire trip by googling Gas prices by State. This didn’t mean this was the price for gas each time we stopped, actually the lowest I came across was $1.89. However, by selecting a higher price you are allowing yourself a safety net. You have to remember you add in miles by pulling off and grabbing food and getting gas. This just gives you a baseline. Now that you have your budget for gas, make sure you have a budget for food and shopping. Sorry, no math formula for that. Haha!

Entertainment – Having your gadgets and chargers are good to keep you occupied. Make sure everything is fully charged before you leave. That means all your gadgets and all your portable chargers. Don’t forget your attachment for your vehicle so you can charge while on the road. If you have a DVD player in your car or maybe even a portable one, make sure you have a nice selection of movies to choose from. Books and crafts (I’m a knitter) are also great and maybe some coloring books for the little ones.

Saving Data – Before hitting the road make sure anything you want downloaded is downloaded. You don’t want to be on the road and get that un-welcomed text about how you have used 90% of your data. You have movies in your iTunes or a playlist on your Spotify that you can download, be sure to do so before you leave. Also turn off data for apps you don’t need it on. I kept mine on for Facebook and Instagram, but that was about it.

Emergency Car Kit – You want to have some items on you just incase you run into a flat tired or need oil. Now, before hitting the road, you should make sure your vehicle is running well enough for such a trip. Make sure your oil and brakes are good. You also want your windshield fluid to be filled and as well as your tires but we know things can go wrong so it doesn’t hurt to have items on you to fix any hiccups you may run into.

Comfort – This can be tricky if you are moving across county like I did and you are in a rental truck. My son and I each had a small throw and I had one big pillow. The pillow was great for when my son fell asleep. Kept his little head from bobbling all around. Now if you are in a car you will have more options to be comfortable and for that reason I am jealous. Be sure to dress comfortably. You don’t want to be in a car for hours with tight jeans on.

Weather – Now this may seem a bit silly but the weather is different all over this country. I left New Jersey at 30 degrees to arrive in Colorado at 60 degrees. You can track the weather across the country and prepare yourself. We hit a snow storm in Indiana and Illinois which slowed us down tremendously. Since I was tracking the weather I knew we were going to run into this and thankfully we were prepared to drive slow and keep warm. I didn’t calculate the time we would lose from this storm though. Oops. If you check out my photo on Instagram you can see trucks were sliding off the road.

Enjoy – This is a pretty simple tip. Enjoy this time with your family and/or friends and take in what you are about to see. The world is made up of all different kinds of beauty and you are about to embark on an adventure to discover them. I encourage the passenger to take lots of photos and videos. This is your adventure and your memories, now is the time to take advantage of technology and capture everything you can.

That Concludes my Driving Across Country Tips

I hope these tips were helpful or will be helpful for your road trip. Driving Across Country was fun and an experience I am thankful to have. We live in this world and sadly we can get so caught up in our lives that we forget about the beauty around us. There is an entire world out there for us to see and conquer.

Now that I am done with my tips, please enjoy some more photos from my journey across the country.

The sunrise in Kansas was beautiful. I can not even begin to express how beautiful the colors were. I wish I had time to pull over and capture all the colors as there was this beautiful purple that was breath-taking and so worth seeing.

Something about all this wide open space made me smile. It was just so wide open and beautiful, you could see for miles and it was nothing but flat land and random trees. If we got lucky we saw some cows and personally, I was pretty excited about that. I think cows are awesome.

Here we have entered Colorado from Kansas and I finally made it to my destination after hitting a snow storm that slowed us down. I didn’t make the time I needed to and now I know to plan better next time. Hope you all enjoyed my Driving Across Country Tips and photos.

The entire time I was writing this post I was thinking about one of my favorite songs played in a Disney Movie.

Love the tips and they’re so spot on. Even though we’ve never packed up and driven across the country, we’ve taken quite a few cross country road trips and these are the same tips we use.
